Last week I posted about Sylvia de Vries, the Windsor woman who was forced, by lengthy waiting periods and incompetent medical care, to seek treatment for ovarian cancer in the USA. She is left $60,000 in debt and is trying to get OHIP to honor their responsibility and provide reimbursement for treatment she was [...]
Gender Bias in Health Care: Women STILL not Getting Proper Diagnosis or Care.
I’d like to bring your attention to an article in today’s Globe & Mail, Even huge tumour can’t secure care in Ontario. It was the subtitle that grabbed my attention: “Woman must cover cost of U.S. surgery.”
In short, this woman, Sylvia de Vries, after being ignored and shunted aside, her concerns about her health [...]
Making the Health Care System More Efficient
Please read this excellent article by Globe & Mail writer Michael Evans. With all the weeping and gnashing of teeth about waiting lists and two-tier systems, it should be noted that there is a movement to modernize the existing system to make it more efficient and more responsive to doctors AND patients. If [...]
Two-thirds of hysterectomies unnecessary
Too Many Hysterectomies? One-third of all women get a hysterectomy before they turn 60. Some experts think two-thirds of them don’t need it.

Why I Don’t Want a Hysterectomy
I don’t have very many readers here at Fat in the Fire so when one of them emails me with a suggestion, I feel it’s a good idea to pay attention. When that reader is herself a well-known and well-respected blogger and freelance writer, I think it’s a good idea to take her suggestion seriously. [...]

The Miracle of Macrobid
She lives! Through the miracle of Macrobid, I’m feeling just about normal again! Whoo hoo! It was an unpleasant couple of days–and the nights were worse. I had fever & chills for an additional two nights after starting the antibiotic–bad enough that Hubby tried to talk me into going to the emergency [...]
Yup, It’s a Bladder Infection
Boy do I feel STUPID –for a couple reasons:
I reverted my my formerly uninsured American self –and “put off” going to the doctor.
While cranberry juice can PREVENT a bladder infection if taken regularly, it cannot CURE one. All I was doing was masking my symptoms. What a moron!
The result? Ten days of antibiotic–effectively screwing [...]
The Progesterone isn’t Working…Maybe?
It’s a good news/bad news situation here at Chez FatLady. The PMS has subsided but there has not been any shedding of endometrial layers. Damn. I’m awaiting a call back from the doctor’s office to tell me what to do next.
Meanwhile I think I have a bladder infection/ I say “I think.” One [...]
FatLady has PMS on WHEELS!
I’ve been taking the progesterone for a bit over a week now. I’m bloated, achy, and crabby as hell! I feel mean. I wake up in a bad mood and I want to kick someone–or something. Good thing we don’t have a dog, right? I was in tears three different times yesterday. I [...]
