Last time I saw Dr. P, I was telling him how reluctant I am to undergo a hysterectomy as suggested by that OB/GYN and how disappointed I am by to not be able to get another opinion in a timely fashion. I was on a bit of a rant I suppose. I was saying that I didn’t want to think of myself as old enough at 50 to no longer have any need for my reproductive organs, my hormones, connective tissues… yada yada yada….

This was right after he told he he cannot get me a referral to an endocrinologist because last time my hormone levels were checked (almost 2 years ago) they were in normal range. (That was whichever hormones are normally checked to see if a woman is entering menopause. Mine indicated I was not menopausal.)  Remembering that is what set off my little rant.

I was saying that I was appalled by the rush to rip out all my girl parts without even trying to balance the hormones and thereby reverse the endometrial hyperplasia. Then I made a sort of an offhand comment about how I’d rather have a weight loss surgery than a hysterectomy.

“Well, strangely enough that can be arranged,” he said.

“Hu-?” said I.

“With your risk factors (obesity, hypertension, family history of heart disease & diabetes), I can submit a request to OHIP and get you in to see a weight loss surgeon in the US–in less time than the 2 year waiting list here in Ontario,” said he.

“Really?”

“Yes, really. If you want, I’ll do the paperwork and you can come back in a couple days and sign it. It’ll take awhile but OHIP will approve it.”

“…Uh…okay…”

So he did.

And I signed it.

I have no details. I don’t know which procedure this doctor performs–don’t even know his name, actually.  I don’t know when this will happen. The only thing I know is that the doctor is in Rochester, NY.

But don’t you think it’s strange that I can get approved for weight loss surgery in the USA but I can’t get a gynecologist in Mississauga???  I sure wish I could figure out how the money is allocated over at OHIP.  Any thoughts?
