It took almost two weeks to get the call with the results of this biopsy. I was contacted by the receptionist. Different receptionist at least (this one is quite professional unlike the two troll-like creatures in the other office.) Still this is a major departure from how biopsy results are delivered in the US. First, two weeks is a life-time when you are waiting to know if you have cancer. Second, only a doctor or nurse would relay test results to a patient.

But hey, her first words were, “There is no malignancy.” In the case of good news, who cares how it is delivered, right?

Except. Her next word was, “But…”

“But…the doctor does need to discuss something with you.”

She gave me an appointment for the following Friday.

…..

When I saw the doctor she told me I have endometrial hyperplasia of the complex atypical variety. She said it was precancerous. She recommended a total hysterectomy, including removal of my cervix and ovaries because I’m “past childbearing age.” She mentioned so kind of alternative treatment with hormones but honestly she downplayed it so much I didn’t even remember that part of the conversation until much later.

They already had the surgery scheduled–30 days hence.

After 18 months of waiting all of a sudden we’re in a big-ass hurry. The shortage of health care here must not extend to surgical facilities. Hmmm.
